Nearly halfway with the West Catholic Athletic League football season along with the Serra Padres set up a specific formula for achievement: Dominant defense plus explosive plays on offense equals victory.
It's math the Padres are executing to close perfection and Saturday afternoon versus Valley Christian was no exception.
The Warriors wouldn't normally score until midway with the fourth quarter through then Kava Cassidy on the floor plus Kelepi Lataimua, Easop Winston and Austin Jackson from the air had already carried Serra to four touchdowns in what would be a 28-7 win to the Padres.
Serra is 3- in WCAL play and, for the third straight league game, their defense has kept a competitor to single-digit scoring.
"I'm just really satisfied with what sort of defense has responded," said Serra head coach Patrick Walsh."Whoever we fire up there, they appear to be made by the defensive staff and so they play hard."
The Serra defensive effort equated to Valley Christian amassing just 155 yards of total offense.
However, the Padres were efficient offensively as well as their 386 yards were more than enough to place distance together and the Warriors for the stat sheet and, more importantly, on the scoreboard.
"It's just good to see various other guys contribute which has freed up Kava (Cassidy) to pay attention to one side from the ball," Walsh said of his rushing attack that featured a tricky, grinding sort of game by No. 8 since the featured back in the afternoon. Cassidy caught two passes for 11 yards and ran the ball 125 yards on 21 carries to enjoy the Serra offensive attack. Younger crowd scored the Padres" last touchdown of the afternoon inside the fourth quarter.
For the rest of time, Serra trusted the top play to obtain the end zone. The Padres got around the board near the end of the first quarter when Matt Fa'aita threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Winston, a senior wide receiver, on fourth down. The top fourth down play would have been a theme for the Padres. Three drives later, after Serra turned the ball over on its previous possession, Fa%u2019aita found Jackson on another fourth down pass the wideout changed into a 41-yard touchdown pitch and catch.
"They virtually changed the game," Walsh said of the plays. "With our offense this coming year, we don't panic in the event it's third and long or fourth and long anymore. We've got the weapons to potentially get that first down. Those were touchdowns, but it was first down yardage. Along with previous years, when it"s third and 12 or long yardage, over the air it turned out more challenging to pick those up"
In the meantime, the Warriors could do very little offensively. They compounded just 87 yards of total offense and the closest they found scoring was obviously a 26-yard field goal attempt that finished up wide left. For the game, the Warriors missed both their field goal attempts.
Up comfortably while they were, it wasn't like the Padres were particularly sharp. They did turn the ball over 3 times (two interceptions along with a fumble). So, with Fa'aita experiencing his accuracy, Anthony Smock tummy flatness, although directly into spell him.
That was to supply opportunities both for kids, Walsh said.
"Obviously, Matt wasn't on. Nevertheless it's in contrast to pitchers where one can't put pitchers within the game. Both kids be aware of it's a crew sports and they love the other which is a advantage to own. [It's] a good luxury to get," he said.
With 4:44 left inside the third quarter, Lataimua got in the loop with a sensational 60-yard touchdown catch that featured a sweet spin progress up the Serra sideline and to the end zone to make it 21-.0
Cassidy's TD came after a nine-play, 59-yard drive three seconds in to the fourth quarter.
